Questing began in 2004 on Martha's Vineyard with a Quest written by Suzan Bellincampi for the Menemsha Hills property owned by the Trustees of Reservation. Suzan had been through a training with Steve Glazer of Valley Quest, which developed the first questing program in our country. Suzan knew the island would be a perfect place to introduce the concept of Community Treasure Hunts.

The first island training workshop was held in 2005 at the Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury. Interested educators and community members learned how to write Quests and the inspiration for other Quests to follow became contagious.

Natalie Munn from the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School took the idea to her students who partnered with various island properties to write eight different Quests. Each organization/property mentored the students and the result was the book Quest Martha's Vineyard. It was published with the support of a Tapestry Grant from the Toyota Foundation and the Martha's Vineyard Times and is available in island bookstores.

Subsequently, the Martha's Vineyard Museum has sponsored three training workshops that have resulted in "Village Quests" for island towns. Participants from these workshops have taken the concept to their properties, classrooms and programs to begin creating a community wide collection of Quests. In April 2007 the Massachusetts Audubon at Felix Neck partnered with Martha's Vineyard Museum to present "Sengekontacket Stories" which culminated in a "Paddle Quest" from Felix Neck. Riders on the Island Home ferry boat are now introduced to Questing with the Quests created by MVRHS Freshmen and Martha's Vineyard Museum staff and published in the Vineyard Visitor.

Training continues, as does active Quest creating. A Quest Council has been established to guide the Quest Martha's Vineyard Program. Events are being scheduled throughout the island to highlight and introduce people to the evolving programs.

The ongoing development of this program is made possible thanks to the generous support of Davis Weinstock.
